Wildwood: A Hidden Gem and its Surrounding Diamonds

Camp Wildwood is a place of everlasting fun and learning, especially to the Girl Scouts of Southern Appalachians. The 12-acre camp is located in Johnson City and contains natural wildlife and beauty, which draws a lot of attention from hikers and campers across the East Tennessee region. While visiting Johnson City’s hidden gem, you might look for other attractions nearby to get the most out of your Girl Scout experience. Rocky Mount Museum – For a chance to earn your Woodworker badge, visit Rocky Mount Museum! Here, you’ll get the chance to observe and study hand-built log homes, learn the techniques used by woodworkers throughout history, and create your own woodworking project though the basic techniques of carpentry. Email Kristin Turner at kturner@rockymountmuseum.com or call 888-538-1791.

WEHC Radio – Located at Emory and Henry College, WEHC Radio provides tours and insider looks for Girl Scouts. Get a behind the scenes tour and learn how radio stations work and why their importance matters to local communities. Tri-Cities Airport (TRI) Tours – Get a group together to explore and tour the Tri-Cities Airport for no charge! Tours are offered for up to 25 people between Monday and Friday and typically last an hour. Special topics of tours include the explanations of baggage claim (how luggage gets from the plane to the right passenger), the importance of TSA and how to prepare as a passenger, an observation deck to watch departing and arriving flights, and much more! Tours can be scheduled by calling the Tri-Cities Airport Services desk at 423-325-6000.

ETSU College of Nursing – Volunteer at the East Tennessee State University College of Nursing by gardening for the community. Juniors and Seniors have the chance to work towards badges, while all girls have the opportunity to give back to the community by planting fruits and veggies for respective residents. Email Carter Wade at wadecm@etsu.edu for more information.

Clinique – At Clinique, girls can take master classes to learn more about skin care and makeup and earn their “Put Your Best Face Forward” Clinique patch. Prime Medical Training – In the case of an emergency, girls are taught to immediately dial 911. These classes teach girls what to do in the time between the phone call and the arrival of EMS. Get hands-on experience with how to treat various first aid emergencies, learn the uses of CPR and AED, and when completed, you’ll receive a 2-year certification card in First Aid/CPR training! Cooking for Badges with Sara Kennedy – Sara Kennedy has been teaching families how to cook for four years. Her classes are tailored to the Girl Scout requirements for each level’s cooking badge. You can check out her Facebook page which features her specialized gluten-free cooking! Classes are offered virtually and are encouraged to be scheduled based on the troop’s needs.
