Girl Scouts began in Savannah, Georgia, on March 12, 1912, in the home of our founder, Juliette Gordon Low. Telephoning a cousin from her home, Low announced, “I’ve got something for the girls of Savannah, and all of America, and all the world, and we’re going to start it tonight!”
Now, nearly 108 years later, Girl Scouts is still going strong as the premier leadership experience for girls. How so? It’s because Girl Scouting is so much more than cookies and crafts. Girl Scouts GIVES girls lessons that last a lifetime, opportunities to explore, the chance to let their dreams soar, courage to stand up for what they believe in, and the chance to lead.

Lessons that Last a Lifetime
By participating in the Girl Scout Cookie Program, girls learn about goal-setting and money management. Their critical thinking skills are developed as they work through Girl Scout Journeys and earn badges. Spending time with their troop teaches them about teamwork. Whether a girl is working towards a badge or raising funds through cookie sales to tackle a service project, she’s learning that her hard work pays off.

Opportunities to Explore
Girl Scouting opens doors for girls to see their world. Nearly 300 girls enjoy Girl Scout summer camp at Camp Tanasi in Andersonville, TN. Camp Tanasi is also open for individual troops and service units to rent during the non-summer months. Many girls take field trips with their troops. Through Girl Scouts USA and WAGGS (Word Association of Girls Guides and Girl Scouts), international trips are also an option for adventurous girls.

The Chance to Let Their Dreams Soar
In Girl Scouts, girls can try new things and take healthy risks in a safe, encouraging environment. They can take up new hobbies and pursue learning new skills all while earning badges. Girls will discover their natural talents and have lots of fun along the way!

Courage to Stand Up for What They Believe In
Through participating in Girl Scout Journeys focused on civics, community service, healthy relationships and more, girls learn about basic rights, helping others, and how to have a voice. With these skills, girls will have the courage to change the world for the better. Whether that’s through voting when they are old enough or helping out at a soup kitchen today, Girl Scouts lend their voice to those in need.

The Chance to Lead
Girl Scouts is girl-led, with girls calling the shots. Troop volunteers work with girls to find out what interests them and go from there to decide what badges and journeys the troop will work on together. Volunteers help girls to seek what issues motivate them towards completing a community service project. Girls plan and run cookie booths and manage their own cookie sales every spring. Girl Scouts is for girls, by girls.
Girl Scouts GIVES girls the chance to be amazing, inspiring, ambitious, daring, and kind GIRLS.
And by GIVING to Girl Scouts, you help continue this legacy that began in 1912. Remember, sign-up on March 12, 2020 to become a monthly donor of $19.12 in honor of Girl Scouts of Southern Appalachians’ Day of Giving. Your donation will go to girl-led, girl-friendly programming and events that help today’s girls become great women of tomorrow.
