Senator Becky Duncan Massey: A Trefoil Society Honoree

The Trefoil Society Luncheon is a special event held each year where the community gathers to recognize a woman who has exemplified the mission of Girl Scouts throughout her life, living with courage, confidence, and character while making the world a better place. This August and September three luncheons will be held, each one organized by the Girl Scouts Council of Southern Appalachians’ Philanthropy department. The second one takes place in Knoxville and is honoring Knoxville-native, Senator Becky Duncan Massey.

Becky Duncan Massey was elected to the 6th Senatorial District in a Special Election in November 2011. She serves on the Health and General Welfare Committee and as Chairman of the Senate Transportation and Safety Committee. She has received numerous awards in recognition for her legislative work focusing on women, children, public safety and the disabled.

Becky retired from the Sertoma Center after 24 years having served as the Executive Director. The center serves adults with intellectual disabilities. She has also served on the Sertoma Center’s board of directors.

Giving back to her community is very important to Becky. She currently serves on the UT College of Nursing Advisory Board and is a member of New Life Gathering Church.  She is a member of Leadership Knoxville as well as Leadership Tennessee Class III.  She has served on the board of directors of Tennessee Community Organizations, the Akima Club of Knoxville, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Overlook Center, and the U.T. Knoxville Alumnae Chapter.

Becky is married to Morton Massey and they have two daughters, Courtney and Kristen and one granddaughter, Bailey.

Growing up in Knoxville, the Duncan family was always participating in ways to help others. Being a public servant was instilled in Becky at a very young age. Her late father John J. Duncan, Sr. served as Mayor of Knoxville from 1959-1964 and as United States Congressman from 1965-1988. Her brother John J. Duncan, Jr., who recently retired, followed in their dad’s footsteps as the U.S. Representative in Washington, D.C.

Becky herself has been a Girl Scout as well as a troop leader. As a Brownie, she presented to President Lyndon B. Johnson the key to the City of Knoxville. Johnson visited Knoxville in May 1964 as part of a six-state Appalachian tour promoting an anti-poverty campaign.

“We are proud Senator Massey is a Trefoil Society Honoree for 2019. She currently serves as one of the highest ranking female public officials in Tennessee state government,” says Elizabeth Kramer, Vice President of Philanthropy. “From her childhood years as a Girl Scout, to the present, she has continued to exemplify what Girl Scouts values: a G.I.R.L.; go-getter, innovator, risk taker and leader. “
