The National Girls Collaborative Project recently released statistics on the state of girls and women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) which found that in kindergarten through 12th grade, girls and boys test at about equal levels in math and science. However, there exists a large gap in those test scores between students from minority and low-income populations.
Through our Girl Scouts of the Southern Appalachians (GSCSA) Outreach program, we are seeking to reach the girls in those under-served populations by providing staff-led Girl Scout programming in community centers and schools at no cost. This ensures that any girl, no matter her background, can have the opportunity to be part of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE). In Girl Scouts she’ll learn about STEM, get outdoors, participate in community service, and develop as a leader in her community.
At GSCSA we’re committed to making sure all girls can design the futures they want for themselves. This month on Giving Tuesday, all funds raised will go to our Outreach program, and thanks to a generous $5,000 match by Pilot Flying J, your dollars will help twice as many girls in our area.
Let’s insure that no girl falls behind in reaching for her dreams!
