Sonia Young, popularly known as “The Purple Lady,” will be honored at this year’s Chattanooga Trefoil Society Luncheon. The complementary event will be held at the Chattanooga Golf and Country Club on Thursday, September 13, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. For reservations, please contact Marguerite Hogan, at 800.474.1912 or by email at mhogan@girlscoutcsa.org.
Our Trefoil Society Luncheon is a special time each year where the community gathers to recognize a woman who has exemplified the mission of Girl Scouts throughout her life, living with courage, confidence, and character while making the world a better place.
Young is the perfect example. A proud Girl Scout alumna, she attended Camp Adahi as a child and earned many badges while growing up. Like any true Girl Scout, Young continues to live by the Girl Scout Promise and Law helping people at all times, whenever and wherever she can.
First and foremost, Young has impacted her world as an educator. She still teaches as an adjunct professor in the Theatre and Speech Department at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. She is the author of Chattanooga from A to Z, a children’s book filled with historical facts and fun trivia about the city. Due to the generosity of Unum, proceeds from the book continue to benefit patients at T.C. Thompson Children’s Hospital. Young also worked at Siskin Children’s Institute and Speech and Hearing Center for 24 years.
Young continues to be heavily involved in volunteerism and philanthropy work in her community. She currently serves on the boards of the McKamey Animal Center, Chattanooga Zoo, Chattanooga Theatre Centre, and the Chattanooga Ballet. She has also been honored as both a Chattanooga Woman of Distinction and a Tennessee Woman of Distinction.
Painting and Silent Auction
This year’s Trefoil Society Luncheon will be accented by artist Liz Lindström as she creates a live art painting of the event.
“The live art created by Liz Lindström for weddings and events is as much a performance as it is a work of art,” states her website. “Lindström paints in a cocktail dress and heels, chatting with guests and explaining her method throughout the painting process.
It takes about four hours for Lindström to create a live art painting. She comes about an hour before guests and captures the architectural structure, adding in the colors and guests as the event progresses.
There will be a silent auction for the painting during the luncheon with proceeds going to support the mission of GSCSA.
